CHAPTER SIX

“What are you so happy about?” Brad and Luke were hauling a trailer of hay out to the back pens where they kept the sick cattle. The vet came out once a week, and in the meantime they kept the cattle quarantined to make sure whatever they had didn’t get worse or passed on to the rest of the herd. It was a pain when they had stock out there. It took an extra hour or two out of their day to go out and feed them. It usually put Luke in a really foul mood. Nothing could ruin his mood today though. He had a date with Annalisa … maybe an all-night date. He couldn’t wait.

“You have a problem with my happiness, Daddy?”

Brad grinned from ear to ear. He did that whenever anyone mentioned his being a daddy. “No, it’s good to see you happy. It’s just curious since it hardly ever happens. That’s all.”

Luke laughed. He knew his brother was right. He was a jerk ninety percent of the time. He just recently began to figure out the reason he was miserable was that he was tired of being alone. He also knew that being with just anyone wasn’t going to fix it, but he was confident that being with Annalisa would. “I’m just having a good day,” he said. “I never asked you about the doctor’s appointment Saturday morning. How did that go?”

“It was for a sonogram because they weren’t sure how far along Stephanie is. She’s right at three months. The baby is perfect so far and I got to hear the heartbeat. It was amazing.” If it had been dark outside, Brad’s face would have lit up the night.

Luke smiled and said, “Do you know what it is now?”

“Nah, it’s still too early. It just looks like a tiny little peanut right now. I think it’s a boy.”

“Probably, girls are hard to come by in this family. How does Stephanie feel about it?”

“She doesn’t care.” Brad laughed. “She just keeps saying if it’s a girl she hopes that she doesn’t end up seven foot tall.”

Stephanie was six feet tall and Brad was almost six-five, so it was a valid concern. “Nothing wrong with tall women,” Luke said.

Brad smiled again, no doubt thinking about his wife. “No, sir, there is not.” Luke pulled the trailer up next to the pen, and as they stepped out of the truck Brad said, “I never got a chance to apologize to you about not moving the cattle on Saturday. That appointment was supposed to be on Monday and they called and rescheduled it at the last minute. I was so excited; I just wasn’t thinking.”

“It’s okay. I’m sorry I was such a dick about it. I’m glad you got to hear your baby’s heartbeat.” Brad suddenly had a sad look on his face and Luke was sure he knew what his brother was thinking about. “Don’t do that.”

“Do what?” Brad grabbed a bale of hay off the trailer and split it open.
